Difficult decisions in complex organizations need leadership to ensure timely, high-quality results. Typically, decision makers delegate the responsibilities of managing the analysis and decision support team to a “decision leader” whose role it is to guide a team to a clear, actionable decision that has the aligned support of all stakeholders. Effective decision leaders orchestrate and lead the activities necessary to achieve decision quality (DQ).

Leading Strategic Decision Making is a highly interactive course where participants learn by doing. Participants will learn a framework and process for making high quality decisions, and practice specific skills necessary for success: identifying the right process, framing the decision, managing team conflict, and coaching others through each stage of the process.

Highlights and Benefits

  • Diagnose a decision situation and design an efficient process for decision making
  • Lead the decision process and effectively facilitate meetings and interactions at each stage of the process
  • Identify barriers to good decision making
  • Manage a group’s interpersonal and organizational dynamics to facilitate agreement and clarity of action
  • Build quality into the decision team’s work products, ranging from individual interviews to project team meetings to decision board meetings
  • Guide productive dialogue among decision makers who may outrank you
Experience & Impact
Who Should Attend
Faculty

Learn what decision makers need to make a high-quality decision with confidence. Design a decision process to achieve it, and drive the decision-making process in your organization. Led by the decision consultants and educators at Strategic Decisions Group, this course builds on the concept of decision quality (DQ), a framework for better business decision making.

The course opens with a discussion of the role of the decision leader to facilitate and guide teams to a high-quality decision. Participants assess the decision-making norms in their own organization against the benchmarks of DQ. As the program progresses, participants will learn to manage team conflict and to guide decision makers who may outrank them. The course explores various leadership styles and participants will have an opportunity to practice a visionary leadership style in an effort to gain commitment to  spearhead a decision effort.

Using a blend of lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and case studies, the course encourages participants to explore their own decision leadership strengths and weaknesses.

Session Topics Include:

  • Introduction to decision leadership
  • Decision quality and organizational assessment
  • Requirements for decision quality (case exercise)
  • Managing team conflict
  • Diagnosis of the decision situation and design the decision process
  • Leadership styles
  • Facilitative leadership and group dynamics
  • Leading successful decision boards

Leading Strategic Decision Making is designed for those who expect to lead large or small organizational teams though a process to arrive at a decision in the face of long time horizons, substantial uncertainty, significant investment of resources, and/or high organizational conflict. Participants in this course are often themselves members of decision support teams, such as finance professionals or analytic staff. Decision makers may also want to attend to learn how to support and develop future decision leaders.
