The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) consists of 10 member countries and has, by and large, been an open and outward looking region. Energy consumption and the ASEAN economy have been growing in tandem over the last few decades. However, the traditionally resource-rich region is now facing a challenge of declining oil reserves. Growing energy demand is likely to put pressure on existing energy sources and supplies, forcing member countries to think about energy security through regional cooperation, increased participation of foreign companies in E&P, investment in oil and gas infrastructure, and increased use of coal and renewable energy.

In this article, Girish Shirodkar and Kunal Rana, two senior members of SDG's India & Asia-Pacific Practice, provide an overview of the energy industry in ASEAN.
