J. Eric Bickel is an assistant professor at the University of Texas, Austin, serving in both the Operations Research and Industrial Engineering Group, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and the Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering. He is a fellow in the Center for International Energy and Environmental Policy at the Center for Petroleum Asset Risk Management.

In addition to his work in academia, Dr. Bickel is a frequent contributor to SDG’s client assignments as a senior engagement manager, specializing in portfolio management, decision and risk analysis, and risk management. His work has encompassed oil & gas, power, and other industries. His recent work included a strategic portfolio assessment for a large independent oil and gas company that played a key role in reshaping the company’s Gulf of Mexico strategy. For an international electric power provider, he developed a new financial methodology to properly account for risk capital.

Dr. Bickel's research papers on climate engineering – the intentional modification of the Earth's climate to offset global warming – were ranked first and third by a panel of world-class economists, including three Nobel Prize winners, convened by the Copenhagen Consensus Center to deliberate and form conclusions about which solution to climate change is the most promising. Read more about the expert panel's findings.

Prior to his return to academia, Dr. Bickel co-led SDG’s executive education practice where he trained consultants, analysts, managers, and senior executives in the theory and practice of decision analysis.

Dr. Bickel holds a PhD and MS in engineering-economic systems from Stanford University and a BS in mechanical engineering with a minor in economics from New Mexico State University. His dissertation research addressed the appropriate risk attitude for public corporations.
